It's everywhere you go: books you must read before you die. Music you must hear before you die. Food you must eat before you die. How's about the Before You Dieists giving us a break by having 20 Films You Must See Before You Suffer A Serious Illness But Eventually Recover From In Order To Resume A Fit And Healthy Life? Who came up with this crap anyhow? Who wants us dead? When someone walks down a street and there's the fiery carriage from a jumbo jet slamming down towards them, what comes first - AAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh! or Oh, no! A fiery death awaits me and didn't really get around to seeing La Dolce Vita, Fellini's acclaimed meditation on celebrity and mortality with consummate performances from Marcello Mastroianni and Anita Ekberg! Aaaahgh!? Or if someone dies choking on their meal in a restaurant, will anyone hear the words 'The Godfather Parts 1 & 2!' rasped mournfully between gurgles? If I had the occasion to walk through a graveyard, a glance at various gravestones sees simple, heartfelt messages of affection for loves ones who've passed on. It's a safe bet I'll never come across one that said 'William Arthur Blewitt, 1950-2008, Beloved Father. Left Us Too Soon. Never Got Around To Seeing 'Weekend At Bernie's'. And the funeral service? What would those be like? "...he was a gracious man who always had time for everyone. Funny, humorous and warm. But I know, as do all of you gathered here today, that his life would never be full because the box set of Lethal Weapon movies remains unopened on his shelf. He goes to a better place, yes, but he must walk with a certain melancholy as he passes through the gates of Heaven, regretful as he ponders the opportunities lost to enjoy the explosive, lively adventures of Riggs and Murtaugh. Those car chases. The action sequences. The funky saxophone riffs. The quickfire cracks between Mel Gibson and Danny Glover, and, oh yes, the slapstick antics of Joe Pesci. He'll miss them all. Soon he'll be at rest, but I hope that there's a cinema in God's kingdom. Because if there isn't, he'll be mightily pissed...' Lists, please, of the 20 Films You'll Have Plenty Of Time To Get Around To Seeing Before Doing That Funky New Dance, The Mortal Coil Boogie.

No particular order, just 20. 1 The Wild Bunch 2 The Good the Bad and the Ugly 3 Spartacus 4 Ben Hur 5 The Godfather series 6 Goodfellas 7 Cool Hand Luke 8 Charley Varrick 9 The Outfit 10 Get Carter (Caine) 11 Once Upon A Time in America 12 Hard Times (Streetfighter) 13 Alien 14 Bullitt 15 Outlaw Josey Wales 16 Ipcress File 17 Patton 18 Where Eagles Dare 19 North By Northwest 20 Zulu many classics ignored? Sure. Some weird choices? sure. Just films I can watch and watch and never tire of.

Maybe next we can list the 20 films you missed in this life that you'll be sure to try and catch in the next. Dang, there I go again, opening another can of worms for those who may not believe in a next life. In the words of the immortal Taylor: "DAMM YOU DIRTY ZOOBA TO HELL! AND KEEP YOUR STINKIN PAWS OFF ME TOO!" For some reason this seems strangely appropriate (the music that is, nothing political): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rPsL2WVhFCc&feature=rec-fresh Rest In Peace dear Maestro Poledouris.

THE EXTRA TERRESTRIAL INDIANA JONES TRILOGY (Soon to be 4) SCHINDLER'S LIST STAR WARS (Dual) TRILOGY JESUS OF NAZARETH LAWRENCE OF ARABIA THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY THE MISSION MR. HOLLAND'S OPUS Looking at the previous 3 lists (and I will be watching to one that are to come), I do not see why the Godfather series and the Lord Of The Rings Trilogy are so great. It just must be me, but I sat through they awhile back and they haven't done anything for me, even the music by Rota and Shore.

I now update my list replacing GLORY for (sorry Harrison) RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK. GLORY is just a tad deeper, me thinks. And don't call me surely/Shirley.

I now update my list replacing GLORY for (sorry Harrison) RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK. GLORY is just a tad deeper, me thinks. Glory is just one of those films that work well all the way around. Although (please this is hopefully not going to start a Horner bashing session) the music has some recycled parts, you always get caught up in it and feel for every character, even Matthew Broderick!

Ran (Kurosawa) Rashomon (Kurosawa) Groundhog Day (Ramis) La Dolce Vita (Fellini) Providence (Renais) 2001: A Space Odyssey (Kubrick) Days of Heaven (Malick) The New World (Malick) Trois Coleurs: Bleu (Kieslowski) Once Upon a Time in the West (Leone) Kundun (Scorsese) The Conversation (Coppola) Ashes of Time (Wong Kar Wai) In the Mood for Love (Wong Kar Wai) Chungking Express (Wong Kar Wai) The Insider (Mann) Heat (Mann) Vertigo (Hitchcock) Touch of Evil (Welles) Wings of Desire (Wenders) Blade Runner (Scott) Life of Brian (Jones) Cries and Whispers (Bergman) Solaris (Tarkovsky) It hardly seems fair to cap the list there, but time is short.

Ian, this is one of the funniest damn posts I've read on the FSM boards. Comedian Larry Miller once said, years ago, "My dad is a hard-working, tough guy... and I'm not. When he was my age, he fought in a war, put himself through school, and worked at night so he could afford to build his own house. *My* greatest accomplishment is having all five 'Planet of the Apes' films on tape." Cheers! -- Jon

Neat thing about the film industry, and contrary to popular belief, for every bad film there is a classic/must see one.
