Robert Pattinson & Director Bong Joon Ho Break Down a Scene From 'Mickey 17' (2025)

I noticed as well, when he says like a virgin,

he really squeezes her.

They're actually really sweet together considering

they're just both psychotic.

[Bong speaks Korean]

Hello, my name is Bong Joon-ho.

[Bong speaks Korean]

My name is Robert Pattinson and I play Mickey Barnes

in Mickey 17 by Bong Joon-ho.

This is Notes on a Scene.

[pens rattle]

[classical music plays]

[Marshall] My brother travelers...

[Ylfa] And sisters.

And sisters.

It is long that we have come.

Four years together in this ship

and I, we, love you like our very own family.

This is the spaceship.

The colony spaceship landing on a new planet.

They think it's an uninhabited planet just covered in ice

and snow and they've been traveling on the spaceship

for four years.

Like, how many people?

More than 500 people How many people...?

More than 500 people, yeah.

But you're the only one expandable there.

Yeah, I've already died a few times by this point.

This is whole VFX.

Nothing exists on set.

[Bong speaks Korean]

[Marshall] My brother travelers...

[Ylfa] And sisters.

[Marshall] And sisters.

It is long that we have come.

Cherry pink, magenta.

[Bong speaks Korean]

He had fake teeth as well, right?

Yeah.

Fake teeth. Fake teeth.

And very old fashioned suit.

[Bong speaks Korean]

...Four years together in this ship,

and I, we, love you like our very own family.

And here we are.

Right below us awaits our very own planet of purity.

[Marshall coughs]

[Bong speaks Korean]

Mark is a failed congressman?

So he just lost his election and he's trying to start

a new colony on a distant planet.

[Marshall coughs]

What the fuck is wrong with him?

He's so annoying.

Maybe he has the flu or something.

Like a virgin vanilla ice cream,

touched for the very first time.

[Bong speaks Korean]

Gonna be really cold.

The amazing thing about the set, I remember as well,

was the shaking is real.

It was very exciting.

[Bong speaks Korean]

When I was shooting the omnibus movie

called Shaking Tokyo

with Japanese crew members in Tokyo, 2007.

[Bong speaks Korean]

Whoever's going down there first is gonna freeze to death.

[Bong speaks Korean]

Mickey has a malformed left arm.

[laughs] And he's doing physiotherapy.

It's a very, very light weight, so... [laughs]

It's like a three pound weight.

He needs to be strong for the new planet.

[Bong speaks Korean]

Yes, it does, it does.

[Bong speaks Korean]

Gonna be really cold.

[Bong speaks Korean]

[Bong exclaims] [Robert laughs]

The timing.

[Bong speaks Korean]

We got it!

Moving on!

[Bong speaks Korean]

You and Naomi was... Every take was so good, so...

You know, ironically this scene...

It's very difficult to do an accent

when the world is shaking around you

because your larynx too fragile.

My accent is shaking too! [laughs]

Sometimes it was stronger, sometimes it was weaker.

This is a weaker version

that was trying to just gently land on the planet.

Shaking Pittsburgh.

Shaking Pittsburgh. [laughs]

Yeah, I'm just glad you allowed me to do it.

I'm glad you told me to not do the original accent.

[Bong speaks Korean]

Everyone on the ship has come

from completely different places as well.

There's English people, but I guess, like, in the future,

everybody's from Pittsburgh.

[laughs] Why Pittsburgh?

And all accents.

The ship took off from Pittsburgh.

You've never been there.

So, this is Mickey 17, and later on in the movie

we meet the next iteration of Mickey who is a sort of...

[Bong] Maybe 11.

Oh, you're right!

It's not Mickey 17. Before vaccine test, right?

Yes, yeah, yeah, yeah.

He's Mickey 11.

I'm confusing, though.

Is it 11 or 12?

Yeah, there's a few Mickeys to go. [laughs]

And then you meet Mickey 18.

The crew has gotten so used to printing these Mickeys out

that they're not even really trying anymore

and Mickey 18 is a bit of a, like, there's been a jam,

there's been a paper jam in the printer

and people have just, like, hit it a bit

and 18 comes out all, like, kind of,

there's, like, a smudge in his brain and and he just...

Yeah, he's a lot crazier than all the Mickeys before

Whoever's going down there first is gonna freeze to death.

[Man Over Radio] That's it, Mickey, deep breaths.

[Bong speaks Korean]

So, wasn't it the biggest amount of salt that's ever been?

Yeah, exactly.

[Bong speaks Korean]

[Man Over Radio] That's it, Mickey, deep breaths.

Fill your lungs.

Imagine there's an unknown virus in the air

and you're sucking in every single microscopic particle

floating around.

[Bong speaks Korean]

All the viruses.

Fill every alveoli. [inhales]

[Bong speaks Korean]

It's North London?

Right.

Cardington. Yeah.

[Bong speaks Korean]

It was snowing inside the building.

Like, real snow.

[Bong speaks Korean]

This suit was great.

The only difficult thing was when we did the space walk

in this, which, trying to act like you're floating in space

is incredibly difficult when you...

Actually, this part and here, here,

is quite metallic something.

But not that heavy.

No, no, this was all great.

I loved this, it was like a tracksuit.

[Bong speaks Korean]

Space ship, VFX.

This is a costume, and then...

AI character.

[both laugh]

Fill every alveoli. [inhales]

[Bong speaks Korean]

Yeah, but I did a lot of stuff on this set.

This set looked so beautiful.

The light just to your eye looked so nice.

It was actually very relaxing.

[Bong speaks Korean]

[both laugh]

[Mickey exhales] So good!

[Scientist] [Mickey retches] Oh, so good.

Brilliant.

[Mickey] There really was an unknown virus in the air.

A lethal one.

[Bong speaks Korean]

It's a very small trash hole for so many people.

'Cause everyone's delivering their trash.

I mean, I guess it is like a volcano.

It's probably quite quick.

[Bong speaks Korean]

Oh, yes.

[Bong speaks Korean]

[Mickey] There really was an unknown virus in the air.

A lethal one. Bye-bye!

[both laugh]

[Bong speaks Korean]

[Scientist] Brilliant.

[Mickey] There really was an unknown virus in the air.

A lethal one.

Thanks for watching us break down this scene

and we hope you enjoy the movie.

Thanks.

Thank you.
